My speculation here is a massive war, and the enemies you fight are the weapons developed for the war. Reva's flavour text (Society may have collapsed, but there are still people worth protecting out there) indicates some sort of apocalyptic event. I think there are a few details we can infer as well. Serif also seems completely unconcerned about anything other than protecting Eden, as she will loop time if you break into Eden and destroy it, but she doesn't bother looping on neutral runs where you never get into Eden, even though people have been killed.Īnd that's basically everything I could find about the lore of One Step From Eden. Serif seems to be responsible for keeping bad people out of Eden, as she will only let you in if you complete a pacifist run. She always has red eyes when you play her. Shopkeeper also seems to have two personalities, becoming evil and sadistic when you see her in the dark world, and gaining red eyes. Also, when a genocide run is completed, in the final cutscene, shopkeeper is not seen with her face reflected by a shard of glass, like other characters are, the glass is simply missing. Shopkeeper also doesn't go into Eden upon completion of a pacifist run, we can infer this isn't simple laziness on the dev's part as she still has a unique animation when you spare Terrable, like every other character. Shopkeeper is a mystery, she has Yami, easily the most powerful spell in the game, but doesn't use it when you fight her, we know she has it instead of it simply manifesting when she is killed, because if you complete genocide as shopkeeper, your deck is replaced with Yami as if you were any other character. Terra is the leader of some kind of new world government, this comes from her flavor text saying she is "The leader of her new world" and her flavor text in the game files, saying she is "A cult leader" I Couldn't find anything about Reva, Gunner, Shiso, Selicy, or Violette. Also, Hazel refers to her with a nickname, implying their relationship isn't strictly antagonistic. This comes from her flavor text.Īt some point Hexawan was attacked, this comes from Hazel's flavor text which states "She couldn't stop them but she did manage to escape with a couple turrets of her own" this is possibly when Hazel and Saffron met, as Saffron was a member of a military organization, however Saffron developed spells, so she likely wouldn't be part of an attack. This comes from dialogue Hazel can have when you fight her as Saffron, where she says "You're not going to win this time Saff!" This comes from her character flavor text. Saffron designed spells for some kind of military, which may or may not also be one of the organizations producing specific spell brands. I can't seem to figure out where Eden came from, whether is was a paradise built before the apocalypse or sent to earth by a higher power of some kind, Serif is completely unkillable except by Yami, but Serif's power and Yami could just both be highly advanced technology.Īs far as characters go I've found the following: I've found there are actually very few sources of lore in the game, as almost all of the flavor text is completely unrelated, but I have managed to find a few things, mostly from the character flavor text.Īs for the world the game, the description for the game on Humble Bundle and Steam both say "Eden is the last shining beacon of hope in a bleak post-war world" we also know that there are 10 brands of spells, presumably produced by different groups.
